Visit to Vivarail, Bletchley.

Images by Vivarail

By kind invitation of Vivarail, IRO members have been invited for a ride aboard one of their recently-launched Class 230 units created for West Midlands Trains (WMTL).

The Class 230 is a unique exercise in ‘up-cycling’ of rolling stock, taking redundant ex-LUL District Line electric trains and re-purposing them for the mainline railway. This includes a flexible, modular traction system which has been conceived in such a way that it can call upon a variety of power sources ranging from a diesel engine, as in the case of the WMTL unit, or batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, or a combination in ‘hybrid’ format.

The visit starts at Bletchley station at 11:30 where we will meet at the main entrance on the Western side. We will catch the 12:01 towards Bedford, alighting at Ridgmont station for lunch in the cosy station tea room, during which Vivarail Chief Engineer David Horton will give us an overview of the Vivarail story to date as well as future plans. There will also be an opportunity to view the small heritage centre at Ridgmont station.

We will return to Bletchley aboard the 14:20 from Ridgmont, returning to Bletchley at 14:37 where the visit will finish.

This tour is strictly limited to 12 participants. Places must be booked using the booking system below and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

This event is now fully booked. However, if you wish to go on the reserve list simply book as per usual. In case there are cancellations or if places become available for any reason in which case you will be given a place on the event.
