Event Details

Effectively engaging operations personnel in the very earliest stage of railway projects is essential if we are to avoid extensive rework or having to live with operational workarounds for sub-optimal decisions at the beginning.

Using the recent Victoria Line Upgrade (VLU) to 36tph as a case study, this event will describe how and where significant benefits accrue from involving Operational input in the context of major upgrade programmes. The VLU included the replacement of the entire rolling-stock fleet, the installation of a new signalling and automatic train control system, and the construction of a new service control Operations centre.

Our speaker will be Michael Coultharde-Steer, Lead Operational Development Manager at LU. He has 17 years of experience with LU, spending 7 years in front-line operations, on stations at first, and then as a Duty Manager (Trains).  For the past 10 years he has worked as an operational representative working alongside the engineering and project management teams of several major railway upgrades, providing specialist operational knowledge, representing the interests of the end-user, and liaising with front-line operational staff on behalf of the project teams. We are running this talk in collaboration with the Rail Interest Group (RIG) of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) and welcome all IRO & RIG members. You are also very welcome if you are not a member of one of these organisations but you work in the railway industry (or are looking to join the industry) and are interested in becoming a member. Refreshments will be available from 17:45 and the event will be followed by our popular networking session giving you the opportunity to meet fellow railway industry professionals. If you are not yet a member please email se.comms@railwayoperators.co.uk to book your place
