Presentation on “The Pendolino Lengthening Project” by Jason Rowbottom, Project Manager, Alsom Transport.

Despite (or perhaps because of, in part) an investment of nearly £9bn in modernising the West Coast Main Line over the last decade, predictions show that the route will be at full capacity by the end of this decade. Several senior industry players have warned that distraction by the challenges of High Speed 2 will lead to significant problems on classic routes such as the WCML itself if we sit back and do nothing with these. To this end, lengthening the Class 390 Pendolino fleet from 9 to 11 cars, and the building of 4 additional 11 car sets, has been a key objective of the current franchise owner Virgin Trains.

To suggest that the programme has been complex is a simplification, since discussions first started in 2007. Timing the modification to the existing fleet to coincide with major overhaul opportunities, whilst securing the cross-party collaboration of government, train operator, train builder, finance provider and so on has provided much news material and industry comment in the last few years.

But – set 390054 has been successfully running trials since mid 2011 (seen here at Crewe); Edge Hill depot has been modified to enable the physical lengthening activity and the introduction of the upgraded trains to revenue service is nearly with us.

For this presentation, Alstom will introduce us to the engineering challenges posed by this fascinating project.
