Presentation by Martin Gallagher, Head of Level Crossings, Network Rail, on the level crossing programme: history, present status, technology developments and the future.

One of the most topical areas of interest to the railway operator in Britain today, the continued existence of the level crossing presents the rail industry with many substantial challenges. Widely publicised campaigns on proper use and equally widespread coverage of mis-use have not yet diminished the number of incidents that occur at the road-rail interface (including user worked and occupation crossings) on a daily basis. Technology is only part of the solution, and wholesale closure is not a complete answer! Increasingly, the right approach is crossing-specific and often comes down to simply doing the right thing, even when the economics don’t stack up.

Martin Gallagher, Network Rail’s Head of Level Crossings will illustrate what’s been done and what more must be done in this critical area.
