A presentation by Mark Smith – the Man in Seat Sixty-One

Mark is a career railwayman who started with British Rail’s Southern Region and ended up at the Department for Transport, in charge of ticket and fare regulation. He has a passion for international train travel and shares his extensive knowledge and experience through his website, seat61.com.

His presentation to us will cover some aspects of Continental railway ticketing and how it has changed over the years, from intricate tariffs based on gold francs and Q+PD formulae to even more complicated yield management systems based more on algorithms than algebra.

But it will also be about the sheer fun of long distance train travel and the many trips that Mark has made over the years. Forget what the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy told you. You don’t need to know where your towel is BUT: “Never travel without a good book and a corkscrew…”

This is a free to attend event, however, due to TfGM Building Security Arrangements, BOOKING IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. Your place is only secure when you have had an e-mail confirmation from the Chairman.

17:30 for light refreshments, 18:00 Start

To reserve a place, please send an e-mail to nw.bookings@railwayoperators.co.uk

IRO Members are kindly requested to bring their membership cards.
