The next meeting of the IRO Midlands Branch takes place on Monday 7th January 2013 when Tim Walden and David Anderson of Network Rail will discuss the GN-GE project.

Built in the early 1880s as a primary route for the transport of coal from Yorkshire to East Anglia, the GN-GE joint line today runs from Werrington Junction (just north of Peterborough), through Spalding, Sleaford, Lincoln and Gainsborough to Doncaster where it rejoins the East Coast Main Line. One of several projects that make up a strategic programme of works supporting the delivery of extra capacity on the East Coast Main Line (ECML), successful completion of GNGE will lead to improved performance, reliability and capacity, with a significant reduction in heavy maintenance required over a 15 year period.

The key aim of the project is to create a primary day-time route for freight traffic, removing it from the ECML without increasing journey times whilst at the same time increasing gauge and operational capability.

The project also includes the largest ever level crossings programme of its type on the national rail network, with the renewal/enhancement of 61 level crossings, including the installation at 23 locations of Manned Controlled Barrier Obstacle Detection (MCB-OD) – new to the national rail network and utilising the latest technology to scan the crossing for obstruction.

In this presentation – the last of three in the IRO Midlands programme this season on strategic themes in the rail industry, and originally scheduled for October last year – David Anderson, Senior Sponsor with Network Rail Infrastructure Projects, and Tim Walden, Alliance Services Manager for the project, will guide us through the myriad of interfaces and opportunities the project has to deal with.
