A visit to the East Lancashire Railway

The East Lancashire Railway has a rich history, and is one of the most popular preserved railways in the UK. Running from Heywood to Rawtenstall, steam and diesel locomotives, haul vintage rolling stock, with beautifully preserved stations along its route. The railway is a great attraction for people of all ages, and our visit will include a full round-trip from Bury-Rawtenstall-Bury, with opportunities for photo-stops. It is the intention to have a break for lunch on return to Bury, after which it will be possible to visit the nearby Bury Transport Museum, which details the industrial heritage of the North West. Members and their families can also make the round trip from Bury-Heywood-Bury, to complete the journey over the entire 12.5 mile length of the ELR.

This event is expected to be very popular, and in order that suitable accommodation can be reserved for our party, members are asked to book promptly through the IRO Website. Closing date for bookings will be 30th June 2019.

It is the intention of the IRO N.W. Area Council to subsidize at least part of the day’s activities, in order that the cost to Members and their families is kept to a minimum. The level of subsidy will obviously depend on the numbers taking part.
