IRO Area

Event Details

The IRO North West and Wales Area are the guests of Alstom at their purpose built overhaul facility in Widnes.

With over 13,000 square metres of space, Widnes is the largest rolling stock modernisation facility in the UK. Its vast size, and close embrace of ‘Industry 4.0’ principles, makes it ideal for work on intercity trains. Alstom has started work on the €28 million contract to re-paint the 56-strong fleet of Class 390 ‘tilting’ Pendolino trains, which are used by Virgin on the West Coast Main Line. Industry 4.0 features of the contract will include innovative Virtual Reality painting simulators that the team will be trained on and will use to validate the work.

It’s a unique chance to look behind the scenes at what Alstom are doing to make these workhorses franchise fit for the new West Coast Partnership and beyond.

As this visit will involve a walk round an active worksite, PPE will be a requirement. This is in the form of railway-approved footwear, HV Vest, Safety Glasses and Bump Cap. We have a supply of vests and glasses but, if possible, please provide your own bump cap, they’re only a few quid!! Please enquire if you have any queries.

This is a free to attend event.
